Helmut Marko believes that Max Verstappen has made a “huge leap” in performance since 2021 because “he’s a lot more mature driver”

Max Verstappen won his second Formula One world championship with a victory in the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix, and Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko praised the Dutch driver for “showing his class” throughout the whole 2022 season.

At Suzuka, Verstappen won by almost 25 seconds over the next car to earn his 12th victory of the season and clinch the title over Ferrari opponent Charles Leclerc, who was penalized for cutting the chicane on the penultimate lap.

Marko stated to Sky Sports F1 of the feat and its dramatic setting: “It’s incredible. Only after the announcer congratulated them on winning the World Championship did we find out. It came as such a shock, but a pleasant one.

Marko said on the changes he has seen in Verstappen this year: “He’s considerably more calm.” The Dutchman has dominated the season after beating Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and winning the 2021 championship. He’s a considerably more seasoned motorist.

When Verstappen began from the middle of the pack in Budapest or Spa, the first thing he said on the track was, “I wondered, who is in this car?” When he was out of the way of traffic, he let them pass, and then he demonstrated their class by letting fly. It’s a major development, and I hope it’s not the last of his performances.

With his 2022 win, Verstappen joined an exclusive group of drivers who had won the title twice, and Marko wondered aloud if the 25-year-old had what it took to break the record of seven titles held jointly by Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.

I believed Michael’s record was unbreakable, but then Lewis matched it. To accomplish [that], I believe a confluence of several elements is required. Still, Marko said, “he’s not the sort that goes after records; I believe one day he will say, ‘Fine,’ and he will walk away.

With 165 points separating Red Bull and Ferrari alongside four races remaining, the team’s attention will go to capturing its first constructors’ championship since the 2013 season with Sergio Perez, who leads Leclerc by a point in the drivers’ standings.
