Mercedes driver George Russell was disappointed with his eighth-place result in the Japanese Grand Prix and blamed a poor strategy selection by the team for his failure to finish in the top five.

Before the race was red flagged, Russell moved up to P7 from P8 at the start thanks to Carlos Sainz’s collision into the wall. After the restart, Russell, along with most of the field, came into the pit lane to make the move from the wet tyres to the intermediates.

With Mercedes trying to double stack him behind teammate Lewis Hamilton, Russell lost valuable pit stop time and dropped to 14th place. In the end, Russell was able to work his way back up to P8, but believed it might have been much more.

We need to investigate what happened,” Russell added. Having double stacked and found myself just a few spots behind Lewis, I knew I was doomed to fail. It was a really difficult afternoon, and I don’t think I can say much more than that.

In all likelihood, [I] might have contested for P5. It was fairly pleasant out there doing some decent overtakes but we need to get down with the team and evaluate what we might have done better because I believe it was maybe at the moment not the correct thing to do.”

It was difficult for the drivers to determine “where the driving boundaries were,” Russell said when questioned about the Grand Prix’s early goings.

“The grip was excellent, but the issue was we couldn’t see anything,” Russell explained. You couldn’t tell where the speed limits were, where the puddles were, or where the rivers were because of the heavy spray.

That’s why it came down to visibility alone. Maybe newer automobiles are spraying more, but I haven’t seen a difference. Despite the numerous positive developments in the racing industry, this may be one of the few drawbacks.
